pressing
A perfectly timed break in the wet weather cleared the way for a wonderful Saturday gathering apples from our favourite orchard in Suffolk.
A mix of four or five different varieties. And there's enough for juicing.
One enormous barrowful provides two large buckets of juice.
Crunchy apples pulped instantly by shiny (potentially lethal) machine.
Juicy pulp squished into three 'cheeses' of cloth stacked neatly into the press.
Turn handle, squish fruit, bring on the juice.
Crank handle - extra pressure for the final squeeze.
Fresher isn't possible.
Can't even begin to tell you how sweet, perfumed, fresh and alive this stuff tastes.
We drank pints of it right away, and more for Sunday breakfast before Harvest Festival in the rural parish church. Makes it easier to believe the ancient wisdom of the farmers' hymns; "All good gifts around us..." etc etc.
